Our three UK Mills…

• SILLOTH MILL
  Where it all began … In 1836 Jonathan Dodgson Carr started milling flour at the Carr’s Silloth Mill located in Cumbria. This was to supply flour for his famous  Carr’s Table Water biscuit factory. Within 15 years Carr’s of Carlisle had become one of the largest baking businesses in Britain. A champion of good causes, he was a remarkable man, with a life shaped by hard work, thrift and a pioneering spirit. He was the first person to recognise the benefits of high quality Canadian wheat, which is still used today. It is here at Silloth, where all the retail range of bags of Carr’s flour are made and packed.

• HUTCHISONS MILL
  The Kirkcaldy mill has a long history of flour production, dating back to 1826 when Robert Hutchison developed a grain processing plant which would eventually occupy a great swathe of the port area of East Kirkcaldy, on Scotland’s East coast. Carr’s head office is based at Kirkcaldy. The mill is one of only two remaining flourmills in Scotland. Although still on its original site, there has been substantial investment and in 2010 the port facilities were re-opened, so that wheat could be delivered by boat. In 2013 a new mill was built and at the time of building this was the most technologically advanced mill in the UK. Flour from locally-grown wheat is still regarded as the key ingredient in Scottish shortbread and biscuits.

• MALDON MILL
  The Maldon mill is the smallest and most flexible of the Carr’s mills. It is located on the banks of the River Chelmer, in Maldon Essex where it has been since 1896. It is located in the heart of one of the finest wheat growing regions in the UK and as a result 70% of the wheat is locally sourced within 30 miles of the mill. Maldon mill, is a supplier to many of the artisan bakers, particularily in the London area.
